The New Merle Rage in Doodles

What is a Merle?

The merle pattern is a genetic trait that gives the dog's coat a mottled or marbled appearance, often with patches of lighter and darker colors. It can also affect eye color, resulting in striking blue or multicolored eyes.

Be careful when getting a merle doodle that you ask your breeder for a full genetics panel on both parents. Two parents carrying the merle gene can result in bad genetics and can cause health problems in the offspring, such as deafness, blindness, or other issues associated with the double merle gene. At Palouse Doodles, whenever we breed a Merle parent, we always make sure that both parents are tested with a full genetics panel.

Coat & Patterns

Double Merle Caution

  •  Coat: Merle doodles often have curly or wavy coats, inherited from the Poodle parent, which can make them low-shedding and hypoallergenic.
  • Blue merle: Black and gray patches with a marbled appearance.
  • Phantom merle: A blend of the merle pattern with distinct tan or rust-colored markings.

Genetic Panel

Genetic Panel

In genetic panels for animals, such as those provided by Animal Genetics Inc., the presence and type of the merle gene are typically indicated by testing for the PMEL17 (also known as SILV) gene. The merle pattern is caused by a specific mutation in this gene.

Palouse Doodles uses Animal Genetics for testing of our dams and sires. See the explanation below for the status and genotype results.

Genetic Panels Testing for Merle

Merle Status

  • M: Indicates the presence of the merle allele (mutation).
  • m: Indicates the absence of the merle allele (non-merle).

Genotype Results

  • M/m: The dog carries one copy of the merle allele and one copy of the non-merle allele. This dog will likely express a merle coat.
  • M/M: The dog carries two copies of the merle allele (double merle). This can lead to a heavily merled or mostly white coat and increased risk of health issues, such as deafness or blindness.
  • m/m: The dog does not carry the merle gene and will not have a merle coat.
